20 KB is one of the smallest limits you'll run into, and it almost always points to a tiny display size. The image will be shown at avatar or icon dimensions, so the platform enforces a hard cap to keep thousands of these little images from slowing pages down.

• Forum and message-board avatars (phpBB, vBulletin, and older community software).
• Profile pictures on legacy accounts and intranet systems.

How to keep a 20 KB image looking sharp

The single biggest lever at this size is dimensions. A picture displayed at 150–300 px wide simply doesn't need thousands of pixels, and shrinking it there recovers far more space than quality tweaks alone.
